WALDEN SAVINGS BANK AWARDS $2,500 SCHOLARSHIP TO GOSHEN HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE

The community-oriented scholarship is in memory of former Bank President David T. Cocks

MONTGOMERY, N.Y. (July 15, 2020) – Walden Savings Bank recently awarded Goshen High School graduate John Loughran with the 2020 Walden Savings Bank David T. Cocks Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan, awards $2,500 to an inbound college student who mirrors the character of Cocks, a former President and CEO of Walden Savings Bank.

2020 Walden Savings Bank David T. Cocks Memorial Scholarship recipient John Loughran is a decorated Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Loughran worked to beautify the prayer garden outside of St. John’s African Union Methodist Protestant (AUMP) Church, located at 207 W. Main Street in Goshen.

“I wanted to do something meaningful for my Eagle Scout project,” Loughran said. “I met with Diane Dinan, a volunteer at St. John’s, and she told me about the small congregation and the church’s history. I could sense that it was an amazing church, and to know how much it meant to their elderly congregation to see the church improved and grow really resonated with me.”

Loughran has been an active member of both his school and local community. He was a member of the Goshen High School boys varsity soccer team, a participant of Team EVA, a youth-based volunteer organization whose purpose is to increase awareness for Rett Syndrome, and represented the Goshen Central School District as a TEDxGoshen presenter.

“We are delighted to award the David T. Cocks scholarship to Jack,” said Joann Menendez, Vice President and Corporate Secretary for Walden Savings Bank. “He’s an inspiring member of our community, which made him the perfect candidate for this award. He exemplifies the characteristics of Mr. Cocks, with an emphasis on his legacy of service and good work.”

Loughran is headed to the University of Buffalo to study political science and looks forward to getting involved in community based advocacy in the city of Buffalo.

“This scholarship means a lot to me, not only financially but it is also a great recognition by the community,” said Loughran. “I can tell Mr. Cocks was a great man based on the generosity and thoughtfulness of those around him.”
