Residents can support local farmers and develop healthy habits by purchasing locally grown produce.
LIBERTY, N.Y. (June 27, 2018) – The Town of Liberty will offer a weekly farmers’ market at Creekside Park beginning June 29, 2018 and concluding August 31, 2018. Area residents and visitors can support local farmers while improving their nutritional health by purchasing locally grown fruits, vegetables and fresh-cut herbs. The market will take place on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 119 N. Main Street, Liberty.
“We are excited to participate in the Catskill Mountainkeeper Farmers’ Markets. These weekly events promote local, sustainable agriculture and convenient access to healthy foods for area residents and their families,” said Liberty Town Supervisor Brian Rourke. “The Sullivan Catskills are known for its farm-to-table movement, and this program serves as an economic engine for our local farmers, small business owners and artisans.”
Town of Liberty residents 60 and older are eligible to participate in New York State’s Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. This program aims to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables among seniors and increase awareness among community members about the availability and benefits of fresh, local food. Proven benefits include a decreased risk of hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
This initiative provides eligible recipients with vouchers that can be used for the purchase of fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from approved farmers’ markets around New York. Vouchers for five $20 coupons are available for eligible seniors on a first-come, first-served basis at the Sullivan County Office for the Aging, located at 100 North Street, Monticello.
Liberty Farmers’ Market is approved for the ‘Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program’ (FMNP), the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Vegetables and Fruit Program and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formally EBT) benefits.
