Town and Village of Liberty Receive Joint Municipal Grant for Community Improvements

livertyLIBERTY, N.Y. (March 7, 2016) – The Town and Village of Liberty were awarded a joint $15,000 municipal grant from Sullivan Renaissance at the organization’s annual conference Saturday at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. The grant will fund the ongoing effort to beautify Liberty’s public spaces and make them more visitor friendly.

The town and village are also in the running for a $100,000 capital grant secured by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, which will be awarded in August.

“The Town and Village of Liberty are dedicated to beautifying Liberty and creating a healthier community,” said Liberty Town Supervisor Charlie Barbuti upon receiving the grant. “We are thankful to receive this grant and appreciate all of the assistance that Sullivan Renaissance provides to not only Liberty, but to all of Sullivan County.”

Specific plans include:

  • creation and enhancement of green spaces, including plantings, flags and kiosks, including the two traffic circles that serve as gateways to Liberty
  • increased legal code enforcement of highly visible neglected properties
  • improved signage and maps for the Rail Trails, Walnut Mountain and Hanofee Parks

These plans will need volunteer involvement to be implemented. A Volunteer Fair is being organized by the Liberty Networking Group on Saturday, March 12 from 11 am to 2 pm in the Liberty High School cafeteria. The goal is to recruit civic minded business leaders, organizations and citizens to participate in one of the grant funded initiatives.
