U.S. Military Academy at West Point, 606 Thayer Rd, West Point, N.Y.: Visit the iconic military academy to explore the history of the site that began as a Revolutionary War fort strategically located overlooking the Hudson River. The West Point Museum includes two murals by a D-Day veteran depicting the Allied Invasion of Europe in 1944, an atomic bomb of the type dropped on Nagasaki and the cannon that fired the first American shot of World War I.
Storm King Art Center, 1 Museum Road, New Windsor, N.Y.: Explore large-scale sculpture and site-specific artworks on 500 acres of hills, meadows and forests. Established in 1960, Storm King supports artists and some of their most ambitious works. Visit this summer, through Nov. 13, to experience three temporary exhibitions from New York-based Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, Los Angeles-based artist Beatriz Cortez and RA Walden, a former artist-in-residence at Shandaken: Storm King.
New York Renaissance Faire, 600 Route 17A, Tuxedo, N.Y.: Fantasy rules at the Renaissance Faire, considered by many to be one of the best in the country. Explore 16th-century English village on 65 acres, with 20 stages and more than 100 shops with artisans offering handmade wares. Thrill to acrobats, a living chess match and a jousting tournament. The wide array of food and drink includes mead and roasted turkey legs. It all comes to life every Saturday and Sunday, plus Labor Day, from Aug. 26 to Oct. 8.
