Storm King Art Center Winter Weekends

See Storm King Art Center’s Famous Sculptures in a New Light

ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2022) – Storm King Art Center is widely renowned as a 500-acre showcase of modern and contemporary sculptures. But while it is a wildly popular Orange County, N.Y. destination in the warmer months, winter weekends bring their own magic to the vast outdoor museum and the surrounding area.

A Storm King Arts Center Winter Weekend makes a great centerpiece of an unforgettable weekend in the county, shopping, hiking, dining and exploring.

“Storm King Art Center, one of Orange County, N.Y.’s signature attractions, is a new and unique experience in each season!” said Amanda Dana, Director of Orange County Tourism & Film. “In the chillier months, the sculptures stand out more boldly against a blanket of white or a starker landscape. It’s a wonderful experience to see them in the light of a Hudson Valley winter. When you’re finished marveling at the renowned art works, explore all the other treats that make Orange County so special.”

Located at 1 Museum Road in New Windsor, Storm King Art Center is open Saturdays and Sundays through March 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. (Member-only hours from 10 a.m – 11 a.m. Sundays.) Timed tickets must be purchased in advance.

Enjoy the park but make time to do more. Hike in the 2,000-acre Storm King State Park or try one of the eight marked trails – more than 20 miles of hiking – in the 2,700-acre Schunnemunk Mountain State Park.

Don’t miss the chance to peruse the Shops at Jones Farm. Delight at the homegrown produce and gourmet foods in the country store, just try to resist the baked goods in Grandma Phoebe’s Kitchen, and wander among the furniture, jewelry, clothing and accessories in Clearwaters Gifts, a converted Dutch barn.

For a unique dining experience, visit Painter’s Tavern, where the eclectic menu blends local seafood, meat and produce, served in a restaurant that’s also an art gallery. Stay at the Cromwell Manor Inn for old-style elegance. The Manor Building is a brick mansion built in 1820. The original home, now called 1764 House for the year it was built, offers charming Colonial ambience in four rooms.

You can also create your own itinerary – or explore spontaneously – with suggestions from Storm King Art Center’s website at https://stormking.org/local-amenities/. The Orange County Tourism & Film website, www.OrangeTourism.org, is also always the go-to site for things to do, see and enjoy.

For your visit to Storm King Art Center, be sure you check the weather and dress appropriately. Storm King Art Center in winter is strictly an outdoor experience. Bundle up when it’s cold, and as always, wear comfortable walking shoes. Stay on the cleared paths and use caution.

Depending on conditions, some sections of the site may be closed or inaccessible for safety reasons. Some sculptures may be winterized, moved or removed for conservation.

A warming station is located under the picnic pavilion near South Parking.
