Rolling V works to bring awareness to school bus safety
South Fallsburg, N.Y. (April 24, 2017) – Rolling V Bus Corp., a Catskill Region-based school bus transportation company, has announced the company will participate in the annual Operation Safe Stop Day, a statewide initiative to promote school bus safety.
On Thursday, April 27, school districts and police in Sullivan County and around New York State participate in Operation Safe Stop Day, a program started in 1993 that promotes stopping for school buses. Every day, nearly 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass school buses according to the New York Association for Pupil Transportation.
“Each day, our bus drivers are transporting the most precious cargo possible – our children,” said Nicole Dungey, Director of Safety & Training at Rolling V. “Operation Safe Stop is a fantastic opportunity to bring attention to a common safety issue, and help to educate drivers on the importance of respecting stopped school buses.”
On Operation Safe Stop Day, Rolling V’s safety team works with local law enforcement to identify known trouble routes for motorists who illegally pass school buses. Though school bus drivers are not allowed to stop a vehicle as the local law enforcement can, the driver can report a vehicle to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, who could issue warnings and fines, which could range from $250 to $400 for the first violation, five points on the registered motorists license and even imprisonment. During “Safe Stop,” police officers participate in marked and unmarked patrol units, in addition to placement on various school buses, to help combat illegal passing.
Rolling V also participates by sending local Terminal Managers and Safety Officers to local police departments and schools to provide education materials on the importance of Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1174, which details the limitations on overtaking and passing school buses.
Phil Vallone, President at Rolling V, added, “The safety of our students will always be the top priority at Rolling V. I am proud to again participate in Operation Safe Stop Day to help to bring awareness and protect the safety of our passengers through a meaningful partnership with our local law enforcement.”
All violations and tickets from Operation Safe Stop Day are reported to a central command post so that final figures are readily available to state and local officials.
