MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (January 5, 2018) — Theatre lovers are in for a treat when students in the Mount Vernon City School District’s Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School take the stage later this month. The Lion King Jr., produced and directed by Evelyn Collins, is an adaptation of the ©Disney classic. Performances will take place on January 26-28 in the auditorium at Mount Vernon High School.
Showtime’s are as follows:
-Friday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m.
-Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
-Sunday, January 28 at 3:00 p.m.
Mount Vernon City School District’s Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School was recently awarded a national grant to produce The Lion King Jr. The Lion King Experience Grant Selection Committee selected the school from of a large pool of highly qualified applicants from across the country. The grant provided the school with a performance license to produce the ©Disney adaptation created especially for the strengths and skill level of middle school students. The Lion King Experience also included a ShowKit™ of materials to help bring the production to life and a rigorous 18-session curriculum on the fundamentals of theater-making.
“This grant has supported our efforts to present a stellar theatrical and musical production while providing our students with a holistic arts education experience that will help prepare them to be successful no matter what their future career paths,” said Evelyn Collins, Founder/Director of the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School. “I invite the community to come out and see first-hand the talented young people whose crafts are being honed right here in their local public school district.”
Through The Lion King Experience, students develop and experiment with a variety of theatrical and 21st Century Skills. From acting and design, to creativity and collaboration, The Lion King Experience is a holistic arts-education that fulfills many educational standards, including some Common Core State Standards and the National Core Arts Standards.
The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School has 250 students in grades 6-9 from all Mount Vernon elementary, middle, private, Catholic and charter schools. Upcoming auditions are scheduled for February 9th at 6:00 PM and 10th at 10:00 AM for students entering grades 6-10 in the 2018-2019 school year.
