Orange County Draws History Buffs

From war encampments to the nation’s military academy, the past has been preserved in the Hudson Valley.

ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. (July 31, 2017) – Orange County’s location between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers led to its strategic importance during the Revolutionary War. General George Washington spent more time at his Newburgh headquarters than anywhere else during the war, and he considered West Point to be the most important strategic position in America. Summer is the perfect time for history buffs to enjoy a scenic Hudson Valley drive and explore these sites which held such a prominent role in our nation’s history.

“Count on the knowledgeable and enthusiastic interpreters at Orange County’s historic sites to enhance your visit,” said Orange County Tourism Director Susan Hawvermale. “Also, be sure to check our events calendar for a full complement of battle re-enactments, lectures, guided tours and special celebrations that will draw the entire family into our rich history.”

Top historic sites include:

United States Military Academy at West Point:
Visit the West Point Museum. Bus tours which include stops at some of the beautiful grounds of the Military Academy leave from the Visitor’s Center daily. Ferry service to the fortifications on Constitution Island and its charming Warner House leave from West Point’s South Dock on designated weekdays through September. Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site: Tour the Dutch-style stone Hasbrouck House that was home to George and Martha as well as his Continental Army Headquarters. He spent more time here than anywhere else during the Revolutionary War. A separate museum on the site features additional exhibits. Enjoy spectacular views of the Hudson River from the front lawn.

Knox’s Headquarters State Historic Site:
The elegant home of John Ellison, the house was occupied during the Revolutionary War by Generals Knox, Greene and Gates successively.

New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site and National Purple Heart Hall of Honor:

Last Encampment of the Continental Army and Edmonston House: In addition to replicated 1782 military huts, there are nature trails and an observation tower. Just around the corner, visit the restored 1755 Edmonston House with period exhibits, blacksmith shop, and slave quarters. It was used as headquarters by Generals Horatio Gates and Arthur St. Clair.
