ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL TO PRESENT INAUGURAL ARTS IN HEALTHCARE SUMMIT IN MAY

Goshen, N.Y. (May 9, 2013) – The Orange County Arts Council is pleased to announce the inaugural Arts in Healthcare Summit, which will take place on Friday, May 31 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. The program aims both to educate and create collaborations between the arts and caregivers of dementia patients to improve quality of life, create healing environments and demonstrate the overall influence of the arts in healthcare settings. The event is generously sponsored by Crystal Run Healthcare, Elant, Inc., Orange Regional Medical Center, Focus Media, and O’Connor Davies.

The complimentary program will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a luncheon and discussion featuring Dr. James M. Noble, Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at Columbia Medical Center, who will address the impact of the arts in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Dr. Noble will also bring his experience as President of the Board of Arts  + Minds, a nonprofit organization committed to improving quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias through engagement with art in museums, community centers and nursing homes.

“The Orange County Arts Council and our fellow sponsors are excited to offer this educational opportunity to the medical community, caregivers and their families,” said Dawn Ansbro, the Council’s Executive Director. “Their work and dedication is something to be greatly admired, and we’re pleased to introduce these individuals to the many benefits the arts can bring to them and their loved ones.”

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common medical conditions associated with aging, and while existing medications target many symptoms, a cure has not yet been discovered. The challenges of dementia affect not only the patient, but also family, friends and professional caregivers. Stimulating arts activities, such as drawing, painting and even music, can help to soothe, strengthen and uplift the patients, their families, caregivers and educators in the medical community.
