Lincoln School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School celebrated by state’s ESSA program

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (July 1, 2019) — Two schools in the Mount Vernon City School District have been recognized by the New York State Department of Education under the state’s Every Student Succeeds Act Plan (ESSA). Lincoln School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School are celebrated for their distinctions under the Recognition Schools Program.

According to the New York State Education Department, “Recognition Schools are identified as such because they are among the top performing under ESSA for performance, student growth and/or graduation rate; met or exceeded either the school or state measures of interim progress for English language arts and mathematics, rate of Chronic Absenteeism, and College, Career, and Civic Readiness; and met the federally required 95 percent participation rate in the English language arts and mathematics assessments.”

“We commend the efforts of the entire learning community at both Lincoln and Rebecca Turner Elementary schools to increase student achievement. The high expectations and shared commitment for student success exhibited by our principals, teachers, and families demonstrate that every child can learn and will achieve at high levels in the Mount Vernon City School District,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton.

Dr. Waveline Bennett-Conroy, Assistant Superintendent of School Improvement for the District, expressed excitement about the news. “I want to congratulate the principals, teachers, students, and families at Lincoln School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School,” she said. “These schools have truly embraced the mission to deliver on the promise of public education for all children, ensuring that we create inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive learning environments in which our students and families can thrive. The innovative approaches to learning at Lincoln and Rebecca Turner Elementary schools not only advance students’ academic success but also prepare them for the opportunities and rigors of the 21st century.”

The Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education will recognize Lincoln School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School at an upcoming meeting. The State will honor Lincoln School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School with a certificate of recognition from the New York State Commissioner of Education.

This is the second consecutive year that Rebecca Turner Elementary School has been designated as a Rewards School.
