Show is a celebration of talent shaping Mount Vernon
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (Aug. 14, 2017) — The Mount Vernon City School District’s Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School (PVAM) will present its Summer Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 17 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Mount Vernon High School auditorium.
The showcase’s theme is a celebration of the talent that has historically shaped Mount Vernon, according to Evelyn Collins, the district’s director of arts and gifted and talented education. This year’s theme is named “Mount Vernon’s Got Talent.”
Arts Magnet students in music, dance, musical theatre and the visual arts will perform in celebration of Mount Vernon natives Ruby and Ossie Davis, Nina Simone, Phylicia Rashad, Stephanie Mills, Denzel Washington, P Diddy, Heavy D, DMX and others, Collins said.
“The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School’s mission is to create a focused and high performing culture that prepares students for success in college and conservatories by nurturing their passion through a rigorous curriculum that integrates a sequence in the performing and visual arts,” said Collins.
PVAM assists each student with discovering and nurturing their talent while utilizing an arts framework to support success in academic classes. Students transfer their creative skills to the classroom and build their cognitive framework and affective mindset to become strong readers, mathematicians, thinkers and learners, Collins explained.
PVAM is designed for creative students entering the sixth through ninth-grades with a passion in the arts. Students can apply from any elementary or middle school in Mount Vernon and are admitted based on an audition in theatre, vocal music, dance, a visual arts portfolio, or playing a musical instrument.
An interview with the student and parent, one letter of recommendation from a teacher, a writing sample and a copy of the latest report card are also requirements for the audition.
Auditions take place in November and March of each school year.
