Muñoz Patterson replaces former Board of Education trustee Stanley Russo
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (September 7, 2018) — The Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education appointed Melissa Muñoz Patterson as its newest trustee at its September 4, 2018 meeting. Muñoz Patterson replaces former trustee Stanley Russo, who resigned earlier this summer.
“I am excited to work alongside Melissa and the rest of the Board. The Board of Education plays an integral role in creating a safe and academically stimulating environment for the students in our District and I look forward to continuing to implement the 20/20 Vision with their guidance and support. I am certain Mrs. Muñoz Patterson will be an asset to our team,” said Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton, Superintendent of the Mount Vernon City School District.
Muñoz Patterson joins fellow trustees Dr. Serigne M. Gningue, Rosemarie Jarosz, Micah J.B. McOwen, Darcy Miller, Adriane Saunders, and Israel Williams, as well as Board President Wanda White and Vice President Arlene Torres. Together, the nine members work in concert with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton and his cabinet to discharge a variety of necessary responsibilities.
The Board of Education’s responsibilities include:
- Exercising educational leadership and drafting policies for the effective operation of the Mount Vernon City School District,
- Employing the Superintendent of Schools,
- Confirming appointments of administrators, teachers and other district staff members,
- Setting goals for educational standards,
- Adopting a yearly budget and authorizing certain expenditures,
- And expressing and representing the views of the community in matters affecting educational programs and needs of the community.
“We’re living in a time when more people are standing up and taking notice of things in our society that need to change. As a parent in the District, I felt called to do something that will have a lasting impact on the community,” said Muñoz Patterson. “I hope to use my position on the Board to be a voice of positive change on behalf of the people of Mount Vernon.”
Muñoz Patterson will serve as the Mount Vernon Board of Education trustee through May 21, 2019. The fourth highest vote getter in the next board election will finish the term, which ends June 30, 2020.
