KIWANIS KINGSTON CLASSIC AWARDS WINNERS

The start of the 2012 Kiwanis Kingston Classic.

Event draws 938 runners for two races

KINGSTON, N.Y. (April 18, 2012) – The Kiwanis Kingston Classic weekend drew a total of 938 runners and 790 finishers. The event raised over $20,000 for the Kiwanis Club of Kingston that will benefit Ulster County youth programs.

“The City of Kingston is truly proud to host such a successful community event and we are so happy that this money raised will benefit so many wonderful local youth programs,” said City of Kingston Mayor Shayne R. Gallo.

Jon Lindenauer and Liza Grudzinski were the top male and female winners, respectively, in Sunday’s 10K Kiwanis Kingston Classic.  The 10K drew 655 participants and 537 finishers.

Lindenauer, 24, from New Paltz, finished the 10K race in 33:55. Lindenauer bested Mike Chow, 33, from Wappingers Falls, by 50 seconds for top honors among the men.

Grudzinski, 32, from Newburgh, finished the race in 38:31. Grudzinski, bested Kierann Toth, 28, Rhinebeck, by 2 minutes, 31 seconds for top honors among the women.

“It was fun getting outside for some fresh air, exercise and some good, friendly competition,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein. “I look forward to even more Ulster County residents taking part next year as our county continues striving to be healthier and more active.”

Team awards and the average time of their top 5 runners were: Shawangunk Runners (38:41), Team Woodcrest (39:21) and Poughkeepsie Kiwanis (42:28).

The 2.1-mile race attracted an additional 283 with 253 finishers. Gianna Frontera, 15, from Newburgh, won the race with a time of 13:27 and Michael Rios, 39, Kingston, led the males with a time of 14:30 and finished second overall.

“This was another great event this year and a wonderful showcase of Ulster County’s hospitality and spirit,” said Ulster County Tourism Director Richard J. Remsnyder.

Event organizer Greg Riley said he was glad to see so many people out to enjoy the race. “Once again we had a great showing of runners and this event is such a deep tradition of Ulster County and Kingston.”

Fanzone awards went to: Ulster County AOH Pipes & Drums; Kingston High School Band; and Boys & Girls Club of Kingston.
