The independent institution is grounded in the liberal arts, and educates approximately 5,000 traditional undergraduate students and 1,400 adult and graduate students in 47 bachelor’s programs, 13 master’s programs, one doctoral program and 14 certificate programs. Marist also offers online MBA, MPA, MS and MA degrees, as well as academic opportunities abroad at its campus in Florence, Italy. Students benefit from more than 80 clubs and organizations.

It has been recognized for excellence by The Princeton Review (Colleges That Create Futures), U.S. News & World Report (#8 Regional University – North), Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Forbes and other notable publications. Today, more than 38,000 alumni and alumnae name Marist their alma mater.
Since being named fourth President of Marist College in 2016, David Yellen has already made a tremendous impact on the institution. He has announced plans to start a medical school in 2022, in partnership with regional health care provider Health Quest. Yellen has also overseen the acquisition of a Marist location in New York City, and the launch of the College’s first doctoral-level program. He has led the development of the institution’s new strategic plan and enhanced its communication and career services initiatives.
“In just over two years, David has spearheaded institutional initiatives and guided several campus development projects at Marist that have served to further raise Marist’s already high national and international profile,” said Mike Oates, President and CEO of HVEDC. “We enjoy a long-standing relationship with Marist that has been a tremendous benefit to our constituents and the entire Hudson Valley, and we look forward to strengthening that bond and doing even greater work with David as a member of our increasingly dynamic Board of Directors.”
Prior to his appointment at Marist, Yellen served as Dean and Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law for 11 years, which under his leadership was recognized as one of the most innovative law schools in the country. He has been frequently included on National Jurist magazine’s list of the 25 Most Influential People in Legal Education. Yellen is a former faculty member of Hofstra Law School, where he held the Max Schmertz Distinguished Professorship and served as Dean. He has also been the Reuschlein Distinguished Visiting Professor at Villanova University School of Law and a visiting professor at both Cornell Law School and New York Law School.
Yellen is a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University and earned his J.D. cum laude from Cornell Law School. Among his many notable accomplishments, Yellen has advised President Bill Clinton’s transition team on white-collar crime, argued a federal sentencing case before the United States Supreme Court and authored numerous articles on criminal law and criminal justice reform. Yellen currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York (CICU), is on the Executive Committee of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and chairs its Finance Committee.
“As an institution we at Marist hold ‘sense of community’ high among our values. We understand the importance of providing sound guidance and resources that help shape people and places to be their best and give their best in our shared global community of the 21st century,” said Yellen. “I look forward to working with the HVEDC and representing our institution on its Board of Directors, which I believe shares those values and goals.”
