Community is invited to be part of send-off efforts which begin at 7:30 a.m. at Stewart International Airport
WALDEN, N.Y (April 3, 2017) — Hudson Valley Honor Flight’s “Mission 15” will take 90 area veterans to Washington, D.C. this Saturday, April 8.
The flight will depart Stewart International Airport in Newburgh at 9:30 a.m. and will take veterans on this all-expense paid trip to visit the nation’s war memorials on the daylong trip. It is scheduled to return around 8:30 p.m. that same day.
This flight will be comprised mostly of Korean War veterans along with a group of World War II veterans, and two Vietnam Veterans. Each is accompanied by a volunteer personal “guardian” who is responsible for ensuring that the veteran’s trip is a memorable one. Guardians are responsible for covering the cost of their trip.
Onboard will be 26 veterans from Orange County; 19 Rockland County veterans; 12 Westchester County veterans; eight each from Dutchess and Ulster counties; five veterans from Pike County, Pa.; four from New Jersey; one veteran from Connecticut and other areas.
Hudson Valley Honor Flight (HVHF) is a nonprofit organization honoring American veterans for all their sacrifices by bringing them to Washington, D.C. to visit their respective war memorials at no cost to them. HVHF is also a local hub of the National Honor Flight Network, which has more than 100 independent non-profit “hubs” nationwide.
“We’re planning a memorable day for these great men and women who served our nation with revered distinction,” said Board Chairman Frank Kimler. “What can the community do to recognize their dedicated service? Come out and cheer them on as we give them this gift of seeing the war memorials to honor their patriotism.”
ShopRite is HVHF’s 2017 Stewart flight sponsor.
“For 2017, ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc. has, again, taken the lead as our Stewart flight sponsor,” said Executive Director Beth Vought. “None of this could be possible without the generosity of our supporters.”
HVHF serves veterans from Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan and Putnam counties in addition to Pike County, Pa., Bergen County, N.J. and Fairfield County, Conn. Veterans from other surrounding counties are also considered.
Mission 16, which is Saturday, May 20, leaves from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y.
