GOSHEN, N.Y. (November 1, 2012) – Elant at Goshen and the Elant at Goshen Adult Day Program is inviting the community to its inaugural Memory Screening Day from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13 at the Elant at Goshen Adult Home. The event is being held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s National Memory Screening Day.
November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, and this is the 10th year for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s National Memory Screening Day. The day marks the focal point of the Alzheimer’s Foundation’s national initiative to promote early detection and intervention for individuals concerned about memory loss, as well as to educate the public about successful aging. Memory screenings are a significant first step toward finding out if someone may have a memory problem, which could be caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other medical conditions.
“Elant wanted to hold an event that would educate the local community about memory loss,” said Elizabeth Grennille, Director of Elant’s Adult Day Health Services. “Our Memory Screening Day is an opportunity for families and friends of seniors who are concerned about memory loss – either now or in their future – to have a conversation with us and learn about successful aging.”
Elant will provide participants with a copy of the confidential screening, which can also be sent to a primary physician. The screening is non-invasive, consists of a series of questions and tasks, and takes five to 10 minutes to administer.
The memory screenings are used as an indicator of whether a person might benefit from an extensive medical exam, and are not used to diagnose any illness and do not replace the need for an exam by a qualified health care professional. Medical follow-up is encouraged.
Grennille said that in addition to inviting people in the community, the Adult Day Program is inviting Elant at Goshen Adult Home residents and short-term rehabilitation residents in the Elant at Goshen skilled nursing care center to the event. The Elant at Goshen Adult Day Program offers two programs – a social model and a medical model, for those in need of nursing care such as checking blood sugar levels, checking blood pressure or dispensing daily medications.
