A day to educate and empower the public on the importance of advance care planning.
Harris, NY – Catskill Regional Medical Center, along with other national, state and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making – an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16 as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD).
As a participating organization, Catskill Regional will provide information and tools to the public so they can talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with New York State laws.
On April 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Catskill Regional will provide free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms at its Harris Campus Cafeteria located on the ground floor at 68 Harris Bushville Road, Harris, NY. Additionally, Catskill Regional Medical Group will also offer the same free information and forms at its Primary and Urgent Care office located at 38 Concord Road, Monticello, NY.
“As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known,” said Imran Ahmed, MD, Greater Hudson Valley Health System Bioethics Committee Chairman. “Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and healthcare providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues.”
The GHVHS Bioethics Committee facilitates the process by which ethical issues are recognized and addressed as they arise in the hospital and the community. When problems cannot be resolved by the patient or patient surrogate, in cooperation with the physician and other members of the health care team, the Bioethics Committee is enlisted to offer assistance. This assistance can include fact finding and clarification, application of the principles of ethics, presentation of multiple perspectives, and/or recommending which courses of action might be followed.
