Catskill Regional Medical Center to Offer Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

Harris, NY – Catskill Regional Medical Center will host a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Course on March 14, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The course will take place at the Community HUB located at 22 St. John Street, in Monticello, NY 12701.

The National Alliance for Mental Illness states that one in five teens and young adults’ lives with a mental health condition. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a free, in-person training for anyone who wants to learn about how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders within the youth population.

This course will be facilitated by Andrew Oni, MA, Community Health Program Coordinator for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System, and Dhanu Sannesy, President of National Alliance on Mental Illness of Orange County. This 8-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents (ages 12-18) who have or may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

The course will cover common signs and symptoms of mental illness in this age group including, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The training will also cover signs and symptoms of substance abuse, how to interact with an adolescent in crisis, how to connect with the adolescent with support and help they need and so much more.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is open to the public and is appropriate for a variety of professionals working with youth including teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, as well as youth group leaders and parents.
