October 2, 2012 – Harris, N.Y. – The Cancer Services Program of Sullivan County, administered by Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), is pleased to announce two days devoted to cancer screening for eligible women. On Wednesday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CRMC’s Livingston Manor Health Center, located at 36 Pearl Street in Livingston Manor, N.Y., and on Monday, October 29 at CRMC’s Women’s Health Center, located at 60 Jefferson Street, Suite 1 in Monticello, N.Y., free breast exams, mammograms and pelvic exams with Pap tests will be available to eligible uninsured and underinsured women over the age of 40. Eligible women and men over the age of 50 may receive a colorectal screening kit.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and according to the National Cancer Institute, it is estimated that 229,060 new breast cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2012. Screening for breast cancer with a clinical breast exam and a mammogram can help physicians detect early forms of the disease, when it is most treatable.
The Cancer Services Program of Sullivan County will be holding many activities to reach out to the community throughout the month. Informational tables will be set up each Friday in October at the Sullivan County Government Building, each Thursday in October at ShopRite, and at local participating pizza parlors, beauty salons and both CRMC locations in Harris and Callicoon.
Appointments are limited and pre-registration is required. Uninsured/underinsured women over the age of 40 who are interested in these free screenings should contact LaToya Lawrence at 845-794-3300 ext. 2115 to see if they are eligible and to make an appointment.
