April 19, 2013 – Harris, N.Y. – Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), in conjunction with the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, announced today a new, free support group for individuals living with MS and their family members. The group sessions, to be held monthly on the first Tuesday, will offer advice, encouragement and education. The first session will be on Tuesday, May 7 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at CRMC’s main Harris campus in Boardroom A on the second floor.
This professionally-led support group provides an opportunity for people living with MS and their family members to openly share personal experiences and coping strategies with others who may be experiencing similar life situations. Participants also have the opportunity to discuss and share issues of special concern such as new diagnosis or dealing with additional symptoms. To register or for more information, call the National MS Society at 1-800-344-4867, option 1 or visit www.supportgroups.MSnyc.org
Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.1 million people worldwide.
The National MS Society addresses the challenges of each person affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move forward with their lives. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. Join the movement at www.nationalMSsociety.org.
