Kingston, N.Y. (August 21, 2013) – The Birches at Esopus in Ulster Park, N.Y. celebrated the grand opening of its craft studio last Thursday, August 15. This expansion is the latest example of unique amenities at the Birchez Associates, LLC properties. The company strives for a level of excellence in creating a sense of home for its senior residents.
“We design our properties as a place where we would want to live,” said Steve Aaron, president of Birchez Associates. “Providing programming and club activities gets our residents out of their apartments and supports their sense of community.”
The expanded craft studio provides a central space for creative expression and self-satisfaction for the residents of Birches at Esopus. Members of “The Crafters” sell their crafts in an on-site store to help support additional projects and community donations.
“Being a part of the club and sharing our talents with the community gives us a sense of purpose,” said Marie Shultis, a founding member of the Crafters. “Steve and Judy (Aaron) have provided us with a gift. Everything they do for their properties has created a way of life.”
Several town and county officials, including representatives from the offices of Assemblyman Cahill, Congressman Gibson and Senator Tkaczyk, were in attendance. Also joining in support of the property were Ulster County Comptroller Elliot Auerbach, as well as former Congressman Maurice. All expressed their appreciation for the Aarons’ commitment to the community.
“Long after the Birches at Esopus project completion, Steve and Judy continue to demonstrate their love and commitment to the seniors in our community,” said Esopus Town Supervisor John Coutant.
The award-winning community overlooking the Hudson River opened in 2009 to serve seniors age 55 and older at 60 percent of the area’s median income. The Birches at Esopus was the first new construction low-rise multi-family to be designated as an Energy $mart Building by the New York State Energy Research & Development Agency (NYSERDA) and was recognized as the 2010 Project of the Year-Upstate Award by the New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH).
The Birches at Esopus main building, which comprises 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments, offers a variety of amenities including a community center, exercise studio, computer room, media room, meeting rooms, a craft studio and library. Sixteen cottage-style units complete the community, which offers gazebos, lawns, patio areas and a community garden.
