Auditorium will be dedicated to Phylicia Rashad at First Annual In Celebration of the Arts 2019

Proceeds from the star-studded event will benefit the arts education across the District

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (October 9, 2019) — Mount Vernon has a long history of producing outstanding performers in the performing arts. To pay homage to that rich past and support a promising future, the Mount Vernon City School District and the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program are hosting its first annual gala – In Celebration of the Arts 2019.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 3 p.m. at the Nellie A. Thornton High School. The school’s newly renovated 1,685-seat Woods Auditorium is being renamed The Phylicia Rashad Auditorium and dedicated to the renowned Emmy-nominated, Tony Award-winning actress and director. Rashad is also an active Mount Vernon resident and philanthropist.

“This auditorium will be the centerpiece of the District’s performing arts program. I can think of no greater tribute then to name it for Mount Vernon’s own Phylicia Rashad,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton. “Phylicia’s commitment to public education, our school district, and our performing arts program is nothing short of extraordinary. I look forward to building this relationship for the sake of all children.”

“Phylicia Rashad is an excellent example of the traits we want our students to emulate. She’s won the Tony, three NAACP awards, and was nominated for two Emmy Awards.  Ms. Rashad is set to make her Broadway directorial debut in 2020,” said Dr. Evelyn Collins, Principal of The Nellie A. Thornton School of the Performing Arts. “It is fitting that this auditorium will be named after someone who lives and makes an impact right here in Mount Vernon.”

In Celebration of the Arts 2019 will feature performances by artists from Broadway, Metropolitan Opera, film, television, and the recording industry, as well as students from the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program.

Proceeds will benefit arts education across the District.

“Creative kids are bright kids, and the money raised will provide opportunities for our students,” added Collins. “Funding is needed for things like musical instruments, art supplies, field trips, workshops, and maintaining the standards of our theatrical productions.”

Ticket options include: VIP for $100 includes post-reception, Orchestra for $75, Mezzanine for $40 and Balcony for $25. Tickets can be purchased at Thornton High School’s General Office, The Superintendent’s Office and online at www.brownpapertickets.com
